Fish On!

Great fishing spots on the Kenai Peninsula are numerous and the various runs can provide exciting angling experiences all summer long.

One of the best resources for information on where to fish, what to fish and how to catch 'em is the Alaska Outdoor Journal

Also check out the Alaska Department of Fish and Game website  for up to the minute regulations and latest fish counts.

Salmon Fishing

King Salmon show up in the salt water (Cook Inlet) and fresh water rivers (Kenai and Kasilof) in May and continue to build in numbers through July.  Unfortunately the King Salmon fishery is closed indefinitely.

However, our famous Sockeye Salmon are thriving, and enter the rivers in June (early bullet run) and are best caught at the confluence of the Russian and Kenai Rivers.  Main stream Kenai sockeye are abundant in July and the first part of August.

Silver Salmon are in the salt water (Resurrection Bay/Seward and Whittier) in late July and August.  They enter the fresh water rivers (Kenai/Kasilof) in August and continue through October.  Pink salmon are abundant during this same time on even years only.

Halibut Fishing

Halibut fishing is excellent in Cook Inlet (Deep Creek/Anchor Point/Homer) and Prince William Sound (Seward/Whittier) starting in May and continuing through the end of September.  Every year halibut in excess of 200 lbs are caught in these waters.

Trout Fishing

The Kenai River is a world class trophy trout fishery and is managed as such with special regulations in effect.  Trout fishing normally opens around the middle of June and continues through the end of October with September/October being the best time for that trophy rainbow trip.  There are 25-30 lb. rainbows in the Kenai River, as well as  several nearby rivers that have good fishing (Quartz Creek).  If you are looking for steelhead in the fall, the Kasilof and Anchor Rivers are the places to fish.
